How to know if your ceiling is suitable for a fan
How to identify concrete, hollow block or suspended ceilings and what to check before installing a fan.
A fan creates vibration and needs a stronger fixing than a light. The visible finish does not always reveal what is behind it: concrete, hollow block, plasterboard or a prepared structural support.
Inspect the existing point
A metal plate, hook or firmly fixed box is a good sign, but its strength still needs checking.
Suspended ceiling
The fan must not be held only by the board. The fixing needs to reach structure or use suitable reinforcement.
Useful photos
Photograph the ceiling close up, the uncovered point if safe, and a general view of the room.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using the same plugs as for a light
- Fixing directly to a thin board
- Not checking for pipes or cables
THEVULGO tip
If you do not know what is behind the finish, do not drill just to test. A prior check avoids damage and unsafe fixing.
